Wellington is one of the most vibrant cities to visit. The New Zealand capital has beautiful sandy beaches, a waterfront promenade, a functioning harbor, among other beautiful sites to see. It is located on the southern side of the North Island. Once you get to Wellington, you’re surrounded by nature and vibrant cuisine, history, and culture. The night markets, fantastic restaurants, world-class craft beer, and food trucks are among the many reasons you should plan your next trip to Wellington.

How to get in and out of Wellington

There are various ways you can get in and out of Wellington. You can choose from the following means:

  • Getting to Wellington via air is smooth. There are direct flights from every part of New Zealand, Fiji, Singapore, and Australia using different airlines. Both Air New Zealand and Jetstar offer domestic services and one-hour flights from the regional centers. If you’re traveling from major eastern Australian cities, you can book with Virgin Australia, Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, or Jetstar.
  • The flights take three to four hours. When flying using Singapore Airlines, you connect through Melbourne to Wellington four to five times a week. Wellington International Airport is located 15 minutes from the city center. It also has a reliable Airport Flyer express bus service.
  • It’s also possible to get in and out of Wellington by sea. There are regular ferry services across The Cook Strait to and from Picton since Wellington is a coastal area between the North and South Islands. The beautiful scenic journey takes three and a half hours between the Marlborough sounds. Interislander and Bluebridge are the two companies that offer these services. There are different departure hours throughout the day. 
  • You can also decide to drive yourself there by road. Wellington’s city is conveniently located on the two major state highways in New Zealand, the SH1 and SH2. You can get to explore the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail. You can access international rental car companies that have depots in Wellington, such as Avis and Apex.
  • If you decide to go via train, then you can use the Great Journeys of NZ. The journey takes nine hours and is available three times a week. It offers you a diverse view of the North Island landscapes.
  • You can also take a cruise. The city is a popular cruise destination. Over 120 cruise ships visit every year. The cruise ships dock at Aotea Quay. It takes them minutes to reach the city using a shuttle.

How to get around Wellington

When using public transport in Wellington, you can pay either by cash or Snapper, or a prepaid smartcard. Snapper charges are cheaper. It costs $1.66 for one zone trip. The following are the different means you can use:

  • Bicycle: If you want to stay fit while on the move, bicycles are an option.
  • Buses: The buses operate between 6 am and 11.30 pm, and the Metlink buses are all over Wellington. The major bus terminals are situated near Courtenay PI and the Wellington Railway station.
  • Cars: There are various car rental companies available in Wellington, including Apex Car Rental and Omega Rental Cars.
  • Taxis: You can find parked taxis around the corner of Dixon, Courtenay Pl, outside the railway station, and Featherston St. Uber is also available.
  • Trains: There are five Metlink routes from the suburbs of Wellington to other regional destinations. They operate from 6 am to 11 pm.

What to do in Wellington

There are a variety of activities you can indulge in while in Wellington. The following are some of the things you can’t miss out on:

  • Discover the Te Papa museum. There are various interactive and creative exhibitions in the museum that tell the story of Aotearoa, New Zealand.
  • Ride the Wellington Cable Car. This historic car gives you a chance to see the panoramic views of the harbor and city. 
  • Visit the Zealandia ecosanctuary. Get a chance to see native and unique wildlife.
  • Get your tastebuds excited by exploring Hannah’s Laneway. Named the world’s tastiest laneway, you’ll get to find pizza slingers, brewers, bakers, roasters, among others.
  • Check out a 360 view of the city from the top of Mount Victoria.
