On a trip to Launceston, you won’t be far from the natural wonders of Tasmania as the second-largest city on the island offers up plenty of outdoor adventure. Launceston is a history-rich city and a gateway into Tasmania’s wine-growing region. You will find plenty of things to see and do in Launceston as you explore the 200-year-old plus city.

How to get in and out of Launceston

The city of Launceston is situated in the northern region of Tasmania. Launceston is home to just over 87,000 people and is the island’s second-most populated city. Founded in 1806, Launceston is on the Tamar River near to where the North Esk and South Esk meet. Launceston has become well-known as a food and wine centre, attracting foodies from all over the globe. The city is far more than just a place to dine and reaching Launceston from a major Aussie city isn’t difficult.

  • Launceston Airport – Travellers can fly directly to Launceston Airport from major Aussie cities including Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. There are also flights in and out of Launceston Airport that connect to international hubs. Virgin Australia, Quantas, Jetstar, and Sharp Airlines all operated daily flights to and from Launceston.
  • Spirit of Tasmania – If you fancy a scenic look at Victoria and Tasmania, then hop aboard the Spirit of Tasmania ferry which runs from Port Melbourne in Victoria to Devonport in Tasmania. The ferry covers 429 kilometres as it takes passengers and automobiles in both directions.
  • Car hire – The Spirit of Tasmania will take you to Devonport, but you will need to cover the remaining distance to reach Launceston. It is a beautiful 103 kilometres to Launceston from the port town. You won’t regret hiring a car and making the incredible drive.
  • Coach/Bus – A bus runs twice daily from Devonport to Launceston. The journey can take up to half-an-hour and costs up to $35. If you are without a car, it is the easiest, most efficient way to reach Launceston.

How to get around Launceston

Launceston isn’t big and it is easy to reach one end of town from the other in a short timeframe. If you want to get out of town and explore the sites around the city, it can be a little difficult to move about. Having a rental car is the best way to see the sites just outside of town or to explore the wine region of Tasmania. Even without a car, you will be able to get out and about with little difficulty.

  • Metro Services – Northern Tasmania offers metro services allowing locals and tourists to travel around the area. The service network stretches over the region and you will find a number of bus option to reach nearly every major point around Launceston.
  • Rideshare — In 2018, Uber expanded into Tasmania. Travellers can now uses to most popular rideshare app in the world to book travel in and around Launceston. Ola is another rideshare app that is available in Tasmania.
  • Cycling – If you fancy travelling around Launceston and getting some exercise as you do it, then hire a bicycle from one of the rental shops around town. A number of bike rental shops are available, so you can look for a price that fits into you budget.

What to do in Launceston

Launceston has become a foodie haven, but don’t worry, there is more to do than just eat and drink all day long. Although there is nothing wrong with gorging yourself on the locally sourced cuisine, you can find adventure around nearly every corner in the Tassie town.

  • Cataract Gorge is a beautiful urban nature reserve of bushland and cliffs. You will find walking trails of various levels to traverse. You can reach Cataract Gorge from the town centre in just a few short minutes.
  • Launceston is home to Australia’s largest regional museum. The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery exhibits a colonial art collection, blacksmith shop, and planetarium. You can explore the long-standing exhibit on the extinct Tasmania tiger and learn more than ever before on the state.
  • Locally made craft beer is drunk all over Tasmania these days. Hipster local breweries and bars have a popped up all over and Launceston is home to several. Saint John Craft Beer claims to be one of the first local breweries and one of the best. It isn’t the only local craft brewery, so explore the city’s beer offerings.
  • After drinking a few pints of beer, walk off the buzz at the Tamar Island Wetlands Centre. Situated in the Tamara conservation area, you can walk the centre’s trails and view the birds that make their home in the wetlands.

Launceston’s weather

Tasmania’s climate is oceanic along the coasts. The coastal areas experience rainy winters with mild temperatures and cool summer months. The further you travel inland; the cooler Tasmania becomes. It rains often during the year with winter being the rainy season. The good news for travellers to Launceston is the city receives the least amount of rain in Tasmania.

  • The summer months of December, January, and February are typically the warmest, most comfortable months to visit Launceston. Temperatures typical max out at 25°C.·      
  • As summer turns to autumn, temperatures remain warm but quickly grow cooler as winter approaches. It is a beautiful time to explore the nature around Launceston.
  • Winter is the rainiest time of the year. July and August see the most rain in Launceston, although the city gets less rain than the other parts of the state. July is also the coldest month with an average maximum temperature of 10°C.
  • As summer ends the wet weather begins to end as well. August is the wettest month on average and in September the weather slowly begins to warm as spring hits.

Fun Fact

The city of Launceston is famous for still possessing Victorian architecture. Many of its prominent buildings built during the Victorian era still stand today. The old buildings add to Launceston’s beauty and bring travellers to the city for a holiday.
