The Queensland city is a must-visit for anyone seeking a weekend break or extended holiday to the beach.

How to get in and out of Hervey Bay

Hervey Bay is located on Australia’s Fraser Coast. Many visitors to Hervey Bay stop off on their way to the heritage-listed Fraser Island. Fraser Island is the world’s largest all sand island and is popular with visitor from all over the globe. Hervey Bay has just as much to offer as the famous island – if not more. The city is just three-and-a-half hours from Brisbane and two hours from Noosa. It is an easy-to-reach destination and perfect for fun in the sun whether travelling solo or with the family.

  • Hervey Bay Airport – Four flights per day go to Hervey Bay from Brisbane. Flights from other destinations in Australia can be booked. However, connecting flights must typically be made in Brisbane. There are flights from Sydney to Hervey Bay as well as from Melbourne. However, those flights are not offered as often as the ones from Brisbane.
  • Tilt Train – You can reach the Fraser Coast from Brisbane via the Tilt Train quickly and conveniently. Trains depart Brisbane daily but only run twice per day. The Tilt Train leaves from Roma Street Station in Brisbane.
  • Car hire – The drive to Hervey Bay can be made in less than four hours from several locations including Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. Hiring a car and making the drive allows you to be in control of your trip and enjoy the ride. Hervey Bay is not a compact city compared to other travel destinations in Australia. Having a car can be handy for travelling around town.
  • Greyhound Bus – The Greyhound Bus company runs from Brisbane to Hervey Bay. You can sit back and relax on a comfy bus complete with Wi-Fi. Bus trips may take much longer than other options, however.

How to get around Hervey Bay

Although Hervey Bay is spread out, it is still easy to get around with either a hire car, bicycle, or other forms of transport. Many of the attractions are located in close proximity. Hiring a car does open up your options, making it possible to see more of the Fraser Coast.

  • Bike hire – There are bicycle hire companies in town giving you the chance to rent two-wheels and move about. Combining exercise with sightseeing gives you the chance to have freedom.
  • Bus – Hervey Bay has a public transport network of buses that runs regularly around town. Buses run routes to the top attractions around town.
  • Rideshare – Rideshare companies such as Uber operate in Hervey Bay. This gives you the chance to enjoy travelling around the Fraser Coast without having to hire a car. There are also local taxi companies.

What to do in Hervey Bay

There is a lot to do and see in Hervey Bay. It is ideal for individuals who love the great outdoors and spending time at the beach. Hervey Bay is also a gateway to the glorious Fraser Island.

  • The waters off of the Fraser Coast attract humpback whales. From July to November, humpback whales arrive in the warm waters, and can be spotted easily from boats drifting the warm waters.
  • The esplanade is a popular place to roam in Hervey Bay. It is a 17-mile stretch along the beachfront that attracts cyclists, hikers, and runners. Local cafes can be found along the esplanade, so take your time and enjoy the experience with a coffee.
  • If you are looking for free things to do around Hervey Bay, then you are in luck as there are several free things to do in the city. One of the most popular free items is the Botanical Gardens. The 26-hectacre Botanical Gardens is a beautiful assortment of buildings, flowers, and trees.
  • Torquay Beach is picture-perfect and family-friendly. You can reach Torquay Beach from esplanade courtesy of a pleasant 20-minute walk. Once arriving, you will find an expansive beach and warm waters to swim in.
  • Hervey Bay has two very cool museums to seek out. The Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum is a step into the past allowing you to learn about the town’s history. After getting a history lesson, visit the Fraser Coast Discovery Centre. The museum celebrates the marine life of the region.

Hervey Bay’s weather

The Fraser Coast enjoys a subtropical climate. Travellers can experience comfortable, pleasant weather all year-round on a visit to Hervey Bay. The warm weather and ample sunlight mean you can enjoy outdoor activities nearly all year.

  • Summer begins in December and continues to the end of February. Temperatures range between 23°C and 32°C during the summer months. The warm weather is offset by the breezes that blow off of the ocean.
  • Autumn starts in March and the weather begins to cool from there, but not too much. Travellers can expect temperatures in the area of 18°C to 28°C.
  • Winter sees even cooler temperatures ranging from 13°C to 26°C. June to August is still very comfortable and it is possible to spend the day at the beach, enjoying the great outdoors.
  • September sees the start of spring, which lasts through November. Temperatures increase with the average falling between 17°C and 28°C.

Fun Fact

British explorer, Captain James Cook, gave Hervey Bay its name in 1770. Cook sailed to the eastern coast of Australia but found the waters of the Great Sandy Strait to be too shallow for his ship, the Endeavour. Cook named the bay after Admiral Augustus John Hervey, 3rd Earl of Bristol, his superior officer.
